Writing a Cover Letter

  • What is a Cover Letter: A short letter sent with a resume that explains why you want the job and why you are a great fit.

  • Why it Matters: It allows you to show your personality and highlights key skills that match the specific job advertisement.

  • The “10-Second” Rule: Recruiters often make a “first cull” decision in as little as 10 seconds; the cover letter must make it easy for them to see how you fit the job.

  • Formatting Options:

    • Use a table to address specific “selection criteria” from the job ad.

    • Use bold headings and clear sections if the job ad does not have obvious criteria.

  • Tip: While you can use a template, you should adapt and change your cover letter for every different job you apply for.

To help you in the process of writing your cover letter, we have added a section at the end of our resume builder that will also help you build your cover letter. When you are in the resume builder, you can click on the heading at the top of the form that says “Cover Letter” and it will take you straight to that section.
